The above image is a slice of a ‘porn collage’ by the brilliant Andy Bonomo, whose work I strongly encourage you to see.
When we talk about how we designed MakeLoveNotPorn.tv to be SFW except when you are on an individual #realworldsex video page, by far the most common reaction is this:
When you visit the typical adult site, you expect to be visually assaulted by the blinking, thrusting, spurting, scissoring, pounding banner ads that typically surround the content. Not to mention the oftimes eye-popping nature of the previews themselves. Having a marketing background, I totally get it – you want the customer to find your product sizzling enough to want and in order to make it so you resort to all kinds of tried-and-true merchandising shenanigans, not the least of which is showing off your product in it’s most flattering light. In this way, the typical porn site is no different than, say, Amazon or Net-a-Porter*.
On MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, you don’t see anything that would make you want to slam your laptop shut until you are actually on the page where you watch the video. You could be on a plane perusing the library or member profiles and the person sitting next to you would be none the wiser. We took this approach for two reasons:
- We want you to be able to talk about MakeLoveNotPorn.tv and our mission openly and without shame – we’re making #realworldsex socially acceptable and socially shareable, and our experience design needed to reflect that (as much as possible).
- We wanted our experience to mimic, in a way, how you sexually interact with someone you care about – all of that teasing, testing, saucy, sweet titillation that leads to a great rogering session (and makes it great).
This is just one of the many ways in which we sought to draw distinct lines between MakeLoveNotPorn.tv and the #realworldsex we show, and amateur and porn itself.
What do you think? Did we succeed? Do you have ideas for other ways we can make this happen? Let us know in the comments!
* Full disclosure: I am helpless in the face of the kind of shoe porn that these folks offer up on a regular basis.
